Chapter 9

It took a while to get back across town, weaving through late-night traffic in the back of a cab. As Devon pointed out several times it would’ve been a lot faster if he still had his car, to which Gabriel finally sweetly replied that his car had been crushed small enough to fit inside a matchbox. It was at this point that Julian slipped another bill to the driver and asked him to hurry.

Twenty minutes later they came to a stop in a ritzy part of town, several social levels higher than the grimy bar where they’d just been drinking.

“The PC got you guys this place?” Gabriel gazed up from the street, looking highly impressed. “I guess it helps to know people on the inside.”

Julian shifted guiltily. “Well...not exactly.”

Devon clapped him on the shoulder with a grin. “When we learned that the couple who lives here was on an extended vacation, we decided to upgrade. Perks of the job, right?”

He cast a habitual look at Julian, who gave the future a cursory glance then nodded. Coast was clear.

The second he’d been given the go-ahead, Devon moved back a few steps then leapt fifty feet into the air, landing lightly on the balcony above them.

Gabriel let out a low whistle, while Julian simply rolled his eyes.

“Don’t say anything. He just does it for the attention.”

Devon flashed them both a grin, then disappeared inside. A second later, the door buzzed on the ground floor and they were let inside.

By the time they made it upstairs the lights were on, the fireplace lit, and two cold beers sat open on the table. Two, not three. Unlike the others, Julian still had to work that night.

“Welcome,” Devon threw open his arms with a grandiose smile, “to our Icelandic home.”

Gabriel grinned and accepted the beer, clinking it in an automatic toast. “Not bad, Wardell. And it looks like you’re well on your way to forgetting about the car.”

Devon’s smile faded as Julian pulled up a chair at the kitchen table, eager to get this part of the evening out of the way. He happened to have some experience at what happened when you delved too deeply into someone else’s mind. He wasn’t eager to do it now.

Gabriel sat across from him, while Devon pulled up a chair on the other side.

“So, who are we looking for?” Julian asked quietly, his foot tapping a nervous rhythm under the table as he swept his hair back into a quick ponytail. “Are you picturing his face?”

“I have a name,” Gabriel replied quickly. “Aaron Stryder.”

Devon looked up sharply, and Julian paused, half-retracting his outstretched hands.

“That’s it? Just a name? You don’t even know what he looks like?” A guilty silence answered all three questions, and Julian leaned back in his chair, pulling his hair down again in frustration. “Gabriel, it doesn’t work like that. I can’t just—”

“I’ve seen him before,” Gabriel interrupted swiftly. “When I was a child. It’s in my head somewhere, I just can’t...” His shoulders dropped with a broken sigh.
